The REDHED Kit is a UNSC prototype energy shield and thruster attachment kit for Marine Soldiers, this prototype has been created by ONI after testing many years with the Spartan IV program and shielding as a more cheaper way to give Marine and ODST field officers hybrid abilities of a spartan.
The prototype so far has only been issued to select captains and marine fireteam aswell as marine specialists accompanying Spartan IV's on the field.
About the kit:
The REDHED kit is worn like a backpack over the shoulders with a thruster on each side aswell as containing a energy shield batteries. The Marine must also have full coverage of all skin and a full face helmet in order to use the kit otherwise would result
in 3rd degree burns when the shields are being triggered.
The thrusters work as great as the Spartan thrusters, although the shields arn't as powerful as the spartan shields. The kit was built as a cheap solution to giving Marine field captains better protection and spartan-like tactics.
Trivia:
The Marine fireteam's on the field using this prototype are called "Redheads" or "Budget Spartans" by other marines.
Since the shields on the REDHED kit are weaker than the spartans energy shields, the marines do not require a gel layer underneath their armor. Although it still can get pretty warm under heavy fire. Symtoms include the soldier sweating heavily after a fight, staying hydrated while using this device is mandatory.
The kit also comes with a plug in interface that works with most full face marine helmets that shows you the shields conditions.
High officials may also choose to wear Spartan helmets with the REDHED kit instead of the standard Marine or ODST helmet. An ODST named Dare wore a Spartan Recon helmet during the Battle of Earth in 2552.
